Jakarta is the bustling capital of Indonesia, a city home to 10 million people. There are a lot of private language schools where you can find TEFL jobs in Jakarta.

Jakarta and Indonesia in general struggle to recruit enough TEFL teachers each year. This is perhaps due in part to the country’s location on the edge of south-east Asia, lower than average wages for teachers and instability in Indonesia in recent years. There are plenty of positives though and getting a TEFL job here can be easier than in other countries. Teachers don’t need a degree either, a TEFL certificate is enough to secure work in most cases.

Jakarta itself is a frenetic city, with traffic and pollution problems so if you enjoy the quiet life it’s not for you. However there are more job opportunities here than the rest of Indonesia, and you’re likely to earn more money so it’s a good place to start looking for work. The language schools receive most of there business from adults working for multinational companies, looking to improve their English for their career. There is also a growing number of classes for young learners opening up.

The city has numerous museums, a Chinatown and lots of markets and interesting eating opportunities. It’s not an amazing place as a tourist destination but for job opportunities and as a transport hub for getting around other parts of Indonesia it’s a fairly sensible place for TEFL teachers to base themselves.
