Many western teachers arriving in Japan want to teach English in Kyoto. Kyoto is a beautiful city in central Japan. In was the former capital and many of the historical monuments still remain.
The city has a population of about 1.5 million people, which is fairly modest compared to nearby Osaka and Tokyo. Kyoto is situated in a basin surrounded by mountains. Over 2000 Buddhist temples and shrines are dotted in and around the city and its confines. Some of them are incredibly beautiful and internationally recognised as world heritage sites. The Golden Temple, Ginkaku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera a huge wooden temple are some of the most spectacular. Additionally the Gion district of Kyoto contains many old style Japanese houses and the famous geisha tea houses.
There are many opportunities for native English teachers in Kyoto. The city is one of the most academic in Japan and many of the universities employ well qualified English teachers. Also teachers can find jobs in the public school system or one of the many private language schools in the city.
